Description
You are looking at a 1950's Japanese MIDGETEE TETHER CAR; in OUTSTANDING CONDITION. At first glance, this car merely appears to be another example of a Japanese Midgetee … EXCEPT the car has bevel gear drive. The Midgetee was typically powered with a .19- or .29 cubic inch Japanese glow engine with direct drive powering the left rear wheel which was mounted on the end of the crankshaft. But this car is much different.
The body of this car is an original Japanese Midgetee body which has been modified slightly. But the unique part of the car is the chassis.
While the overall design of the chassis is quite different from that of an original Midgetee pan casting, it does exhibit features which suggest that a highly modified Midgetee pan may have served as the original pattern for the chassis casting.
The engine started life as a 1950 McCoy .29 Red Head spark ignition engine, for which the cylinder head, the crankshaft and the front housing and timer assembly were replaced with similar parts from a 1949 McCoy .29 Sportsman glow engine. Cox Thimble Drome gears were used; a 16-tooth pinion gear along with a 28-tooth axle gear for an overall gear ratio of 1 ¾ to 1.
I have not seen another example of this bevel gear MDGETEE.....could it be truly unique....1 of 1??
